Speedy Start At The Shrewsbury 10K

Full Speed Ahead At Shrewsbury

The rush hour got underway at 9am on Sunday (22 July) at The Mercedes-Benz of Shrewsbury 10K as 2,000 runners powered their way around the medieval Shropshire town.

This race was arranged for 18 March but a UK visit from the ‘Beast from the East’ caused this and many other events to be postponed due to icy winds and snow. Shrewsbury 10K organisers, Ultimate Fitness Experience rescheduled it for July and the likelihood of decent weather and that was the reality for this well attended event.

A packed High Street acted as the start with runners quickly getting into their stride as they continued along this historic area. They pressed on through residential areas, the tree-lined Quarry Park and over the English and Welsh bridges spanning the River Severn. Crowds lined the route to offer their support, applauding the runners as they passed and spraying hosepipes to keep them cool.

Paul Jones of Shrewsbury AC was first across the finish line in the Town Centre Square, winning in 33:44. Jack Pickett of Wolverhampton & Bilston AC was second in 34:08 with Thomas Vaughan of Yeovil Town RRC third in 34:13.

Sarah Benson of Telford Harriers won the women’s race in 38:49 followed by Rachel Parker of Mercia Fell RC in 39:02. Sara Willhoit of Shrewsbury AC was third in 40:22.

“A successful day” was the verdict of race director Tom Meehan who added: “Now in its third year, The Mercedes-Benz of Shrewsbury 10K continues to grow and with the 2019 event scheduled for the 17 March, runners don’t have long to wait to chase a PB.”

Entries have opened for the 2019 Mercedes-Benz of Shrewsbury 10K.
