Some Like It Tough!
This event offers runners the chance to take on a tough winter challenge...
One of Scotland’s toughest winter races is back as the Forfar Multi-Terrain Race returns on 1 February 2026. Organised by Forfar Road Runners, the event offers a challenging route that circles the town of Forfar and is just shy of half marathon distance.
The course is famous for its variety and toughness, featuring a mix of country park paths, tarmac, pavements, farm tracks, open fields and bogs. Runners also face the notorious water section which can reach knee-deep and is often ice cold. Because of these demanding conditions, the organisers advise that the race is not suitable for novice runners.
Entry is capped at 250 runners on a first-come, first-served basis, with a cut-off time of two hours 45 minutes. Participants must stop at all six checkpoints positioned at road crossings during the race to have their numbers marked for safety and timing purposes. Course records stand at 1:08:18 for men, set by Kristian Jones in 2018, and 1:26:36 for women, set by Anwen Darlington in the same year.
Despite its reputation for being gruelling, the Forfar Multi-Terrain Race is known for its excellent organisation, warm hospitality and value for money. There are no medals or goody bags, but runners benefit from chip timing, free pre- and post-race massages, hot refreshments and cash or voucher prizes for main category winners.
Post-race hospitality has become legendary, with the bar opening from 12:30pm and the club providing a hearty spread of soup, sandwiches, tea, coffee and cakes for runners and spectators alike.
