Derby 10K Course Short
Derby 10K course found to be short after post race review...
Runners who took part in the weekend's Derby 10K have been left disappointed after organisers confirmed the course was around 400 metres short following an official review. The race, which took place on Sunday (15 March) and attracted more than 3,000 participants, is organised by Derby County Community Trust and has been a staple of the local running calendar since 2002.
Concerns were first raised by runners after the event when GPS data suggested the course measured closer to 9.6K. While many initially believed they had achieved personal bests, those hopes were later dashed when the discrepancy was confirmed.
The 2026 route had been altered due to ongoing flood defence work in Derby city centre and required an official remeasurement in line with UK Athletics standards. This measurement was carried out on 4 March by a member of the Association of UK Course Measurers.
Following feedback from participants on Sunday, an immediate review was launched. Organisers confirmed the course had been set out exactly as instructed, prompting a further verification measurement on 17 March. In a statement, the Association of UK Course Measurers acknowledged the error and its impact, confirming the course as run was approximately 400 metres short.
Despite the issue, organisers commented: "We value AUKCM as a trusted and long‑standing partner, and we appreciate their willingness to address the issue openly. We recognise that mistakes can occur in any large‑scale event and we are grateful for AUKCM’s commitment to working with us on corrective actions to ensure continued accuracy and integrity."
The Derby 10K route traditionally takes runners from Pride Park Stadium through the city centre, passing landmarks including Derbion shopping centre, Derby Cathedral and the Silk Mill before returning along the River Derwent. Organisers said they share the disappointment felt by runners and thanked participants for their understanding and feedback, adding that they look forward to welcoming runners back for the 2027 event.
