Digging Deep In The Dales
Dales Runner races all set for challenging Wensleydale finale...
The curtain comes down on the 2025 Dales Runner series on 13 September with the DalesRunner 40, the toughest and longest event in the calendar, taking place in the stunning surroundings of Semerwater and Wensleydale.
At roughly 42K and boasting more than 3,000ft of ascent, the DR40 is a test of strategy, stamina and mental toughness. While less technical than the series’ earlier races, the course still delivers a formidable challenge, including a steady climb that stretches for almost 12K.
The route takes runners from the start line up towards Stalling Busk, along the Roman Road over the Stake and down towards Cray. Competitors then skirt the base of Buckden Pike before joining the Dales Way through Langstrothdale, passing Yockenthwaite, Beckermonds, Oughtershaw, Nethergill and Swarthgill. The return leg via Cam Houses and the Cam High Road includes a scenic detour around Drumaldrace and Weather Fell, with sweeping views over Hawes before a rapid descent to the finish at Semerwater.
For those seeking a shorter (but equally scenic) challenge, the Semerwater Stomp will also take place on the same day. Covering 10.2 miles, the Stomp shares the start line with the DR40 before looping through Stalling Busk, Marsett, and Wether Fell, joining the main course for the final descent towards the lake.
Both races promise a spectacular conclusion to the Dales Runner series, with breathtaking views and a warm Wensleydale welcome. Post-race, runners will be rewarded with soup, a roll, drinks and cake at the finish.
