The DalesRunner 40K is a challenging trail race exploring Swaledale and Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales. Starting from Grinton and finishing at the Dales Bike Centre in Fremington, the roughly 42K route crosses between the two dales, passing Maiden Castle, Whitaside Moor, Castle Bolton and the Heights of Greets along the way.
Runners tackle hard packed footpaths and tracks, moorland trods and grassy pasture, with a handful of short road sections and some potentially boggy ground. The route climbs onto exposed moorland and crosses the Bolton Estate before descending through Carperby and returning towards Swaledale. Part of the Wensleydale loop is unmarked and requires self navigation, adding an extra challenge to the marathon distance course.
The race is the longest event in the DalesRunner series and showcases the remote landscapes and extensive views that define running in the Yorkshire Dales. From open moorland and historic settlements to sweeping views towards Pen Hill, the course provides a demanding journey through two contrasting dales before the final descent towards Fremington.
