Weather is kind at Alloa Half
After a 2018 when the weather played havoc with Alloa Half Marathon (a victim of the Beast from the East in March and high temperatures on the rescheduled June date) yesterday (Sunday 31 March) saw good conditions – bright but cool – for the 2,000 entrants.
Fife AC's Kevin Wood broke the tape in sunshine on 1:08:23 to claim the 2019 men's title. He was nearly two minutes clear of Scottish marathon champion Michael Wright (Central AC). with vet John Sharp (Inverclyde AC) third (1:12:23).
Central AC's Morag Miller was also impressive in the women's race. She finished in 1:16:55 ahead of club mate Jennifer Wetton (1:20:15) and Chloe Cox (1:21:00).
David Simpson was the midpoint runner in 1:52:51 and the field closed on 3:18:51.
Big contingents of club runners – the colours of Central AC, Fife AC, Wee County Harriers, Carnethy Harriers, Portobello RC, Bellahouston Roadrunners, Garscube Harriers and Springburn Harriers were prominent – were joined by hundred of recreational and charity runners for this popular spring test that is used by many as a staging post to Stirling, London and Edinburgh marathons.
Those supporting good causes included a team of seven soldiers running with backpacks for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. The army team enjoyed great support around the course. Social media feedback post-race was very positive; Diane Brander caught the general mood: "Hubby and I ran it for the first time. Thanks to the organisers, volunteers and general public who took the time to cheer everyone on. Loved the community spirit!"
