Aberfoyle Festival of Trail Running

New Challenge For Aberfoyle

Scenic trail running festival returns with new Ultra Challenge added to the bill...

Trail runners looking for a rugged and rewarding challenge can mark their calendars for 11 October, when the Aberfoyle Festival of Trail Running returns to the heart of Scotland’s Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Set against a backdrop of ancient forests, moorland and dramatic views, the festival offers two standout races for runners seeking both endurance and scenery.

The long-standing Aberfoyle Trail Half Marathon makes a welcome return with its 21K course that takes participants through technical singletrack trails, riverside paths, open hills and pine forests. With around 500 metres of elevation gain, the route is tailored for intermediate and experienced trail runners ready to take on undulating terrain and enjoy fast descents through wild Scottish landscapes.

New for 2025 is the Aberfoyle Ultra, an advanced ultra-distance event offering two route choices: 63K or 52K. The Ultra leads runners deep into the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, covering remote and technical trails, steep climbs and panoramic vistas. With approximately 1,000 metres of elevation, it is designed for seasoned endurance athletes. However, the race also provides flexibility, with multiple cut-off points allowing participants to drop to a marathon-plus distance of 44K or a 21K option mid-course.

Organisers told us: "Both our races reflect Aberfoyle’s reputation as a premier trail running destination, combining varied terrain with natural beauty and expertly marked courses. Whether chasing a podium finish or personal milestone, you will have an unforgettable experience in one of Scotland’s most iconic national parks."
