Second scottishathletics virtual challenge launched

Entries have opened for ‘the 15-Minute Challenge’, scottishathletics’ second virtual challenge. The first virtual challenge, the Tru Wealth Virtual Relays, were a massive hit with the organisation’s members.

Almost 1000 runners took part in the virtual 5K/10K event over the Easter Weekend, including Scotland internationals Jamie Crowe, Alastair Hay, Joe Ewing, Mhairi Maclennan, Steph Pennycook, Fiona Brian, Jenny Selman, Jenny Bannerman and Annabel Simpson.

The next challenge, the ‘15 Minute Challenge’, will be held over the weekend of 24–27 April. Runners taking part must complete a solo 15-minute run between midnight on Friday, 24 April and 11.59 on Monday 27 April.

Runners and clubs must upload their distances in kilometres – only one attempt per runner – via Garmin/Strava by noon on Tuesday, 28 April.

There are four different scoring categories for this challenge:

  1. Total Distance by Individual Age and Gender: A ranking of individual athletes in each age group and gender category running the furthest in 15 minutes
  2. Total Distance by 4 Person Mixed Team – 4 x 15 min Runs: A ranking of teams of four athletes (from the same club, same age group; two male and two female) who covered the greatest distance for their club in the combined 60 minutes.
  3. Total Distance by Age Category: A combination of distances from all runners in each age group category put towards a club’s overall total for the U13, U15, U17, U20, Senior and Masters age groups.
  4. Total Distance by all Club Members: Adding up all distances run by all members in every category above U17 to give one overall total for a club.

As with the first virtual challenge, runners MUST adhere to current social distancing and government guidelines. They should, in particular, avoid busy parks and running routes if possible and maintain a 2m gap on others when passing; they also must not drive somewhere to run.

In addition, runs for this challenge should start and finish at around the same point and can be done either as laps of 1K or more – or out and back.

Clubs and individuals must register for the '15 Minute Challenge' by midnight on Thursday 23 April, with entry free for SA members (£2 for non-members)

Further information, especially regarding U13 and U15 runners, is available on the scottishathletics website.
