Community Spirit Drives The Kings Head Canter 5K
Village favourite returns this summer...
This relates to: Kings Head Canter 5K
The Kings Head Canter 5K returns on 31 August 2026 for its 28th edition, continuing a long standing Bank Holiday tradition in the East Sussex countryside.
Starting and finishing in the villages of Chiddingly and East Hoathly, the race has built a loyal following over nearly three decades, attracting runners of all abilities for a friendly and competitive 5K challenge through the local roads and countryside.
This year's event arrives during an exciting period for East Hoathly, following the successful community purchase of the historic Kings Head pub. The village landmark has recently undergone refurbishment and remains closely linked to the race, with all finishers once again receiving a complimentary drink courtesy of the pub after completing the course.
A notable addition for 2026 is the introduction of chip timing, providing runners with both gun times and chip times for the first time in the event's history. The enhancement adds another level of accuracy for those chasing PBs while maintaining the welcoming atmosphere that has become a hallmark of the race.
The Kings Head Canter has earned a reputation as a community focused event that balances competition with enjoyment. Typically attracting between 250 and 280 runners, the race appeals to club athletes looking for a fast 5K as well as newer runners seeking a supportive environment.
Beyond the race itself, the event reflects the strong community spirit of the villages involved. The connection between the race, local volunteers and the newly community owned Kings Head helps create an occasion that feels about much more than finishing times.
As the 28th running approaches, runners can once again look forward to a well established Sussex race that combines local character, friendly organisation and a classic 5K challenge on the Bank Holiday weekend.
