Tokyo Athletes Challenge medal

Couch to gold medal – Virtual Runners challenges you!

Tokyo Olympic Games is the theme for summer virtual challenge

The nearest any of us is likely to get to the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics is the armchair for a feast of multi-sports action from 23 July to 8 August 2021. The athletics in the Olympic Stadium runs from Friday 30 July and concludes with the men's marathon in Sapporo Odori Park on Sunday 8 August.

We are all going to need something to lever us out of that armchair into the fresh air and what better way than the original Virtual Runners Tokyo Athletes Challenge with a huge gold, silver, or bronze medal to be claimed?

There is an early bird offer saving £4 at present and the medal really is something to be proud of (see image) measuring a whopping 15cms (nearly 6 inches in old money). Apart from the dramatic male and female athletes, it depicts the Olympic torch and portrays the iconic spirit of the Games which strikes a chord as the Olympic Torch Relay commenced its journey yesterday in Fukushima (25 March)

So how do you upgrade to a gold medal? It's all to do with your chosen daily distance (with four days off for 'regeneration'). Select 5k per day and you'll receive a bronze medal; for 10k a day it's silver and for a hardcore 15k a day runners will get the coveted gold.

All participants will receive a starter's number to print at home; access to the results portal; live ranking lists; opportunity to meet fellow runners worldwide online and that superb medal posted to your home. Full results will be available on 9 August, classified by age-group and gender. So you will be a virtual Olympian, with the medal to prove it!

Virtual Runners claims to be: "the fastest-growing runners' movement worldwide with more than 40,000 participants", according to their website. Every month there is an exciting new batch of virtual challenges released, many based on real races or significant calendar events around the world.

Among the many testimonials online we liked this virtual joining together, posted by Geraldine last month: “We just love these medals and the race. One participant from Australia and one from South Africa – me and my dad did it together (virtually). Just love it!”
