Are You Up To This Steep Challenge?
This unique street race has all the ingredients for a fun but challenging experience...
With a 37.45% maximum gradient, Ffordd Pen Llech in Harlech (North Wales) shot to fame when it 'stole' the title of 'World's Steepest Street' from Baldwin Street in New Zealand. Yes, the Kiwis then 'stole' the title back again, but as Baldwin Street doesn't have a race up it, the 'World's Steepest Street Run' title is still one owned by the Welsh town.
Attracting all levels of runners from beginners to seasoned competitors, the World's Steepest Street Run's inaugural outing took place earlier this year and was such a success it will return to the race calendar in March 2023. A spokesperson from organiser, Always Aim High Events, said: "Since our inaugural event in 2022 people have been begging us to run it again so they could come back to take on this unique and novel route, cheered on by the people of beautiful, friendly Harlech."
The 2023 event is scheduled for 25 March and all involved will be hoping that conditions for the 6K race will be as favourable as they were this year. One of the race's real boons is that runners can enjoy some spectacular scenery with views out over Snowdonia and Anglesey.
Speaking about the uniquely steep route, organisers have said: "The 6K route starts at the foot of the castle. As you bear round the first corner, Ffordd Pen Llech looms in front of you rising over 50 metres along its 322-metre length and disappearing round its first bend like a rollercoaster that leaves you wondering what's to come!
"This first bend is the steepest part, but there's no rest for the wicked (or slightly crazy) as you continue to the rest of the run. The run climbs steeply for almost 2K, but then after all that hard work you’re rewarded with long flowing descents with incredible views. As you come down into Harlech you come past the castle and finish back where you started."
Sounds like a steep challenge... but one that has plenty of rewards.
