Temple Newsam Running Track

Fundraising On Track

A 10K Fund Run is planned to raise funds towards resurfacing Temple Newsam running track...

Crossgates Harriers and St Theresa's AC will jointly hosting the Track Restoration Fund Run 10K on Sunday 29 September. The race has been organised to raise money to go towards the cost of resurfacing the community running track at Temple Newsam.

The 10K course will start with a lap of the running track before venturing out into the grounds of Temple Newsam where there will be a mixture of footpaths and woodland trails. Halfway point at the top of The Avenue will provide runners with a beautiful view of Temple Newsam House in the distance. From there they will head further around the estate and back to the running track for the finish.

The 400m track on the Temple Newsam estate was once Leeds' main athletics facility, and was the first in the city for public use when it opened in 1954. After being told that Leeds City Council could not fund rejuvenation work, volunteers from Crossgates Harriers decided to uncover the track themselves and set up a Crowdfunding page to help fund the project.

A spokesperson said: "The full monies gained by this crowdfunding project will pay for a contractor to resurface the track which is currently full of potholes and weeds. Volunteers have cleared much of the extra soil and weeds from the surface which has made the surface look better but still potholed.

"Rejuvenating the track will be a huge boost to the local community. Not only for serious runners, but also for those who want to improve their health in an outdoor safe environment. Because this is volunteer led, there is a huge sense of empowerment and ownership of the full project which we believe means it is more likely to succeed in the longer term."
