Team spirit at the Showground Relays

Stafford Relays Are A Show Stopper!

Competition and camaraderie in equal measures at this annual favourite on a perfect summer evening...

The racing was hot along with the weather at Wednesday’s (14 June) Showground Relays as clubs, families, friends and work colleagues contested over 4 x 2 mile legs. It was how fast your team can go with winners’ prizes up for grabs...

Previously known as Shugborough Relays, this popular event is now held at Stafford County Showground and is a well organised affair from Stafford Harriers. Starting at 7.30pm, the race was short, sharp and successful for many taking part – whether that was winning their category or posting a PB in glorious sunshine.

There were 10 prize categories including winning men’s team (open) and women’s team (open); vets, juniors and family teams: a trophy for the fastest man and woman and an award for the team with the best name. Every finisher from young to not-so-young received a medal.

See the Stafford Harriers website for more details about the categories.

Clubs were out in force as teams from Newcastle (Staffs) AC, City of Stoke AC, Silverdale RC and others fought hard with their eyes on the prize. They got up a head of steam on a course that was a mix of tarmac drives and woodland pathways so firm underfoot, especially in these dry conditions.

The support was loud and lively as teams completed their 2 mile legs at an enjoyable evening’s racing with some fine displays of running.

City of Stoke Ladies won the Female team (open) prize and Vet Men team (over 160 years in total age) prize.

Newcastle (Staffs) AC Kipchoge’s team won the Male team (open) prize.

Run and Ride won the Vet Women’s team (over 160 years on total age) prize.

All the results for individuals and teams can be viewed via the runABC Midlands Race Listing page.

A round of applause for Stafford Harriers and their hard work in setting up this event which was best summed up as follows:”What better way to spend your Wednesday night!”
