General Stanislaw Sosabowski

Run For The General

Run like at soldier at this unique and historical Fife trail race...

Follow in the footsteps of the soldiers of General Stanislaw Sosabowski this September at a 5K race which takes his name. The General Sosabowski Race is organised by Nuts Trail Races and will be held in and around Falkland in Fife on 3 September.

For those who need to brush up on their WWII history, General Stanislaw Sosabowski and his soldiers trained in Falkland and around Fife prior to Operation Market Garden and other battles of the Second World War. His story and that of the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade is closely connected with Fife and is an excellent example of the joint operations of Polish and British armed forces during World War II.

At the end of 1940, Colonel Stanisław Franciszek Sosabowski created a special Polish military unit, 4th Cadre Rifle Brigade in Fife, which was transformed into the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade on 9th October 1941, by the order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Armed Forces, General Władysław Sikorski. The brigade trained in Fife before their operations on the continent. To this day there are many visible signs of their presence in Scotland.

Speaking about the race, organisers said: "We are pleased to announce that we have been asked by the Polish Consulate to host this race as part of a number of events being held to commemorate the Polish Armed Forces who trained within Fife during the Second World. The race entry fee has been subsidised by the Consulate and is a bargain at only £5 with all finishers receiving a superb bespoke medal made in Poland."

The distance for the adults' race is approximately 5K while the children's race is around 1.6K. Both races start and finish on Cross Wynd/East Loan, Falkland. The route for the adult race will follow the trail and wooden steps climbing to the top of East Lomond Hill before returning back down the same way. The children's race stays within the wooded area on the lower slopes of East Lomond.
