Gemma Rous wins Run Harwell half marathon 2021

Alan Newman researches Run Harwell '21

Run Harwell returns to the UK's leading science research hub

When runABC news writer Alan Newman spotted Run Harwell 2021 in the nation's fastest and most comprehensive race results service – via runABC of course – he felt duty-bound to report on the event. After all, he grew up in the area and his Mum once worked in the staff restaurant at the UK's leading innovation hub when its primary purpose was the Atomic Energy Research Establishment.

These days, the futuristic Harwell Campus boasts 700 acres; hosts 200+ organisations; employs over 6,000 people from 60+ nations, and leads the world in science and technology research. It also happens to have immediate access to some of Oxfordshire's and Berkshire's finest countryside, including the ancient Ridgeway National Path – often described as Britain's oldest road, with a history of travellers going back over 5,000 years.

So this was the setting for Run Harwell 2021 on Sunday (8 August) – back after a year's absence with extra events so the whole family could get involved as the half marathon was supported by a 5K race and Kids Mini-Mile.

The shorter runs took in all the Campus highlights, including the Diamond Light Source, while the half marathon enjoyed a challenging multi-terrain route on footpaths, bridleways and tracks meandering up onto the Ridgeway National Path from where runners could enjoy stunning views of the rolling Oxfordshire countryside.

Our picture, courtesy of the free race image downloads, shows the well-travelled women's race winner W35 Gemma Rous (North Devon) enjoying some solitude in the countryside on her way to a 1:34:37 victory over Emily Georgiades (Headington, 1:38:18) and Caroline Pettigrew (W45 Dulwich, 1:46:56).

The top three men in the half marathon were Jasper Baker (Lewes, 1:21:49), M40 Andrew Stay (Finchcoasters, 1:24:51) and Andrew Humphrey (Headington, 1:25:24).

Ifan Phillips (16:55.4) and Evie Warren (18:57.4) led the way in the 5K.

Added extras from MST Events at Run Harwell included a warm-up led by Luke from Bold Fitness; a sports massage by Amy from Peak Movement and Yoga with Emma for post-race cool down.

The event supported local young carers charity BE FREE YC
