Due to last year's postponements and cancellations a number of tours in 2021 are already fully sold out and many Rat Racers are currently on their way to the Moon! There are 4,638 members of the Rat Race Strava club around the world who are busy working towards the 384,400 kilometres joint target, which is the distance from the Earth to the Moon.
Virtual challenges aside, there are a host of enticing real-world adventures at home and abroad that anyone can join. Although Rat Race adventures are designed to be tough and challenging, the logistics and support make them achievable with a modicum of determination and a reasonable level of endurance fitness.
Rat Race offers a regularly refreshed calendar of UK events, European weekends, and their 'Bucket List' of incredible journeys from 7-16 days duration in far-flung destinations.
An example of the Rat Race domestic programme is the Canterbury Trails on 7-8 August 2021. The route retraces the steps of Chaucer's Pilgrims from Southwark to Canterbury Cathedral in one bite – all 67 miles (108kms) – with an optional barefoot final mile to honour the penance of the original Pilgrims, who would complete the hallowed last three miles without shoes!
A classic European weekender is the Sea to Summit in Spain on 3-7 June 2021. This five-day tour includes a 48-hour foot journey to connect the Mediterranean Sea with the summit of Spain's highest mountain – Mulhacen in the Sierra Nevada. The 85km route includes 4,500m of vertical height gain.
The Bucket List collection is as broad as your imagination, with stunning routes in places such as Outer Mongolia, Panama, Patagonia, Dominica, Namibia, and Iceland. It will take your breath away, and lift your spirits, just visiting the Rat Race website to see the fascinating venues.
