Running In Memory At Ilkley 10K
Community 10K with meaning...
Set in the heart of West Yorkshire, the Pete Shields Ilkley 10K returns on Sunday 7 June, bringing a 10K road race that combines competitive running with a strong sense of purpose. Organised by Ilkley Harriers, the event honours the memory of Pete Shields, a respected runner and coach who passed away in 2020, and continues to bring the local running community together in his name.
The race takes place on a fast, flat, closed road course based around a two lap out and back route from Ilkley Rugby Club. With minimal elevation, it offers long, uninterrupted sections that support steady pacing, making it suitable for both experienced runners chasing a PB and those stepping up to the 10K distance.
Now into its third year, the event has quickly established itself as a meaningful fixture in the North calendar. It reflects Pete’s influence within the sport, particularly his work developing runners at all levels and encouraging younger athletes, something that continues to shape the spirit of the race.
Entries are limited, helping maintain the event’s community feel, with a straightforward race setup including a 10:30am start and facilities based at the rugby club. All proceeds are donated to Marie Curie in recognition of the care provided to Pete and his family, adding a deeper layer of significance to the event.
For runners, this is more than just a fast 10K. The course allows for consistent running and strong times, but the atmosphere is shaped by respect, community and shared purpose. It suits those looking to run well while also being part of something that carries genuine meaning beyond the finish line.
Entries are available now via Racebest.
