Pride in place at Tenbury 10K
Popular scenic race with community at its core.
There was sunshine and a warm welcome at Sunday’s Tenbury 10K (7 August) for runners near and far who tasted the delights of this community event. This was a chance for runners to test their limits on an undulating (some might say hilly) route and take home a trophy that was a work of art in its own right.
Tenbury Wells was named ‘the town in the orchard’ by Queen Victoria and celebrates its apple growing heritage with an annual festival. The humble apple was in the spotlight at this event, courtesy of the award winning Michael Lawes who crafted the wooden trophies for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female, age group winners and 1st Junior (20 and under).
This well organised and supported road race was held in aid of Love Tenbury who provides free activities for the local population. The 10K started at 11am followed by the presentation then a fun run for youngsters up to the age of 14 at 2pm. The latter ran a short route on closed roads in the Burgage Recreation Ground.
The Burgage acted as the start for the 10K where runners sped away across the grass and onto rural roads to follow an attractive course around this ancient market town. The hot weather made it hard work for everyone but there was plenty of encouragement along the way.
Jason Bennett of Birchfield Harriers won the 2022 Tenbury 10K in 33:49. Eric Apperley of Croft Ambrey RC took second in 34:33 with Robert Meredith of Tipton Harriers close behind in 34:35.
Croft Ambrey RC claimed first and second in the women’s race with Hannah Fletcher winning in 41:25 and Charlotte Broadhurst second in 43:44. Katie Bexley of Vegan Runners was third in 45:33.
