Pilgrim's Progress
With its combination of history, scenery and challenge this new event will be a great addition to Scotland’s ultra-running scene..
A brand-new ultra marathon is set to join Scotland’s race calendar in 2026, offering runners the chance to follow in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims across the Kingdom of Fife. The Pilgrim Way Ultra Marathon will take place on Saturday 2 May and will see participants cover 90 kilometres from North Queensferry to the historic St Andrews Cathedral.
Organised by Blast Running, the event is inspired by the journeys made centuries ago by pilgrims seeking meaning, purpose and connection. The route pays homage to Queen Margaret’s historic crossing at Queensferry before heading along the ancient pilgrim path to St Andrews, once the revered resting place of the Apostle’s remains.
The fully marked course will take runners through some of Fife’s most historic towns, including Dunfermline, Lochore, Markinch and Ceres, as well as through rolling countryside and past landmarks that have witnessed centuries of history. The event is designed not only as a test of endurance but also as an opportunity for reflection, with the stories of faith, determination and perseverance woven into every stretch of the route.
The Pilgrim Way Ultra will support a Fife-based charity, ensuring the race has a positive impact on the communities it passes through. Organisers are inviting runners to join a VIP early access list ahead of registration opening, giving a select group the chance to secure their place before general entries go live.
