New parkrun In The Peaks
Black Rocks parkrun makes a strong start in 2025...
Derbyshire's Black Rocks parkrun finally launched on 18 January, welcoming 113 enthusiastic participants to its stunning Peak District course in Wirksworth. After months of planning, the new parkrun event is now up and running with organisers and volunteers gaining valuable experience as they ease into what promises to be a popular addition to the parkrun family.
Held entirely on scenic trail paths, the out-and-back course starts at the old railway boundary marker near the Black Rocks car park. Runners head northeast along the High Peak Trail, passing landmarks such as the High Peak Railway Engine House, the National Stone Centre, and enjoying breathtaking views over Matlock Gorge.
The event has already seen two successful weekends, with a total of 363 finishers enjoying the challenge of the rolling trails. Participants have praised the course’s stunning Peak District views, particularly the sight of Riber Castle in the distance.
Following each run, participants and volunteers are invited to enjoy a well-earned post-parkrun coffee at The Quarry Café, located at the National Stone Centre, just a short 500m walk from the finish line.
Organisers comment: "As Black Rocks parkrun establishes itself, we fully expect numbers to grow, with local runners, tourists, and parkrun enthusiasts making it a regular Saturday morning fixture."
