Detox at Scotland’s first 10K of 2019

Runners looking to start their year as they mean to go on – or just blow off the festive season cobwebs – can still enter Scotland’s first 10k of 2019.

The CNOOC Nexen ‘Detox’ 10K will be held at 11.30am on Wednesday, 2 January, in the small Aberdeenshire village of Lumphanan.

Over 3000 runners have tackled the 10km course since the event started in 2004.

The almost circular route is known to be a bit harder than seems fair at the start of the year. It begins with a long, steady incline of around 2km – but after all that hard work, the course turns generally downhill or runs flat the rest of the way. At about 6.5km the route veers off the tarmac road and onto a farm track for about a kilometre. Conditions on this short off-road section can be very tricky (read: very muddy). And to add to the challenge, there’s also a small incline at this point – but it doesn't last long.

Whether it’s down to the difficulty of the course or the state of the competitors at the start of the new year, current course records are modest: 31:12 for men and 35:44 for women.

Prizes will be awarded for first and second place in both male and female categories, for first local male and female, and anyone able to break the course records.

Soup and hot or cold beverages will be served to all finishers in the village hall after this small and friendly event.

Entries are strictly limited and traditionally sell out long before the official closing date of 31 December.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Lumphanan Community Recreation Association.
