History comes alive at London Landmarks Half
Mass participation is back as 11,500 contest capital event
Just as in the Covid-postponed London Landmarks Half Marathon (LLHM) held on 1st August last year, there were more than 11500 finishers at the back on schedule event held on Sunday (3rd April).
In fact, 11565 runners finished the fourth LLHM in 4:38:06 as the capital once again closed its roads and opened its arms to welcome big-hearted fundraisers for headline charity and race organiser Tommy's.
Many spectators were dressed to impress, highlighting London's often turbulent history, and athletes also donned costumes to represent landmarks and sights on the course including Nelson's Column, London Eye, Somerset House, Royal Courts of Justice, St Paul's Cathedral, Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.
One of the tallest outfits was 'The Shard' worn by Virgin Radio sports reporter and parkrun podcaster Vassos Alexander, who ran an hour outside his best (1:32:14) to finish around two and a half hours. Perhaps the trickiest outfit to manoeuvre around the course was 'London Bridge' which required foot-perfect teamwork between Matt Clare and Ian Houston, who finished in a brilliant 2:20:27.
Unencumbered by such attire, the leading men were David Smale (1:08:57), Sam Norris (1:10:47) and Nick Harris-Fry (1:11:40) while the top three women were Ella Fennelly (1:19:33), Emily Meins (1:23:51) and Leanne Ashrafian (1:25:09).
LLHM promoters hope that a further £5 million will be donated to 200+ charities following Sunday's race to take the total raised since 2018 towards the £25 million mark.
