Lilla’s Revenge

Revengeful Running

Challenging trails, dramatic vistas and remarkable history provide this North Yorkshire event plenty of character...

The much-loved Lilla’s Revenge trail race will return on 13 September 2026, bringing runners back to one of the most atmospheric and historic corners of the North York Moors. Now in its fourth year, the 10-mile event will once again follow sections of the iconic Lyke Wake Walk, offering rugged moorland running steeped in legend.

The route leads participants out across Lilla Howe, home to Lilla Cross, thought to be the oldest surviving cross on the Moors. Dating to the 7th century, the cross commemorates Lilla, a thane who gave his life to save his king, Edwin of Deira and Bernicia, from an assassin. It is a striking reminder of the landscape’s deep history and the dramatic stories embedded within it.

Runners also visit Louven Howe, believed to be a Neolithic or Bronze Age long barrow and one of the ancient burial sites that mark this distinctive upland. From there the course descends to Jugger Beck before climbing onto Jugger Moor, rewarding participants with sweeping views that stretch across Whitby, Ravenscar, Scarborough Castle, the Wolds, Blakey Ridge and out towards the East Cleveland coast.

The scenic beauty comes with a warning though, with organisers promising: “Lilla will get his revenge as there is a late sting in the tail awaiting runners before the finish line!" Those who conquer the course will earn a specially commissioned medal to mark their achievement.
