Grand Prix Fell Running
Lakes fell race series kicks off this weekend...
This Saturday, 8 March, marks the start of the Pete Bland Sports & Inov-8 Lakes Grand Prix, a prestigious series of eight iconic fell races across the Lake District between March and October.
Black Combe Fell Race is the perfect opener, with its 8.1-mile course and 3,281 feet of ascent providing a serious test for runners, especially those who haven’t been training in the hills over winter. Known for its challenging climbs, unpredictable weather and exhilarating final descent, Black Combe is a test of endurance and skill.
The Lakes Grand Prix, launched in 2018, brings together some of the most notable and historic fell races in the region. To complete the series, runners must finish at least one long race and three of the other seven. This year’s lineup includes classics like Coniston and Fairfield Horseshoe culminating in the Langdale Horseshoe in October.
The Grand Prix was the brainchild of Pete Bland and his son Matt, first envisioned over a coffee at their Kendal-based running shop. Their aim was to create a unified championship while also supporting local fell races and clubs. Since its inception, the series has continued to grow, expanding to eight races in 2024 and drawing an ever-increasing number of competitors.
With support from Pete Bland Sports and Inov-8, the series offers fantastic prizes for the top finishers. But for many, the real reward lies in the thrill of the race, the stunning Lakeland scenery and, at Black Combe, the post-race pie and brew in the village hall.
