Runners At The Belper Rover

Runners go green at the Belper Rover

There was a rural treat in store for entrants at Sunday’s (18 August) Belper Rover as they completed 30k in the Peak District. They also did their bit to reduce their plastic footprint.

Green was the theme at the Belper Rover from Derby Runner – a delightfully challenging multi-terrain 30K (18.6 miles) open to runners and walkers. Set in the picturesque Amber Valley, Derbyshire with views of neighbouring counties such as Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and even Staffordshire that were ideal for roaming.

The race demonstrated its commitment to the environment, stipulating that entrants must bring their own water bottles for refilling as they wouldn’t be providing plastic bottles and cups. A team of willing volunteers from Belper Army Cadet Force undertook refilling duties at the water stations that were situated every 5 miles.

This event was previously known as the Rugby Rover but returned under new management and with a new route as well as a new name. There was an influx of entries as people were keen to try the new course on trails, tracks, footpaths and road that included a few hills along the way. Start times were 8am for walkers and 9.30am for runners both of which were from Belper Meadows Sports Centre.

Luke Beresford of Ripley RC was the winner of the Belper Rover in 1:58:28. Darren King of Clowne RR was second in 2:03:22 with David Burgess of March AC third in 2:08:12.

Stacey Sangster of Long Eaton RC was the first female in 2:30:54 followed by Helen Morley of Belper Harriers in 2:36:25. Anna Keys of Pudsey Pacers RC was third in 2:38:36.

There was a medal, bottle of beer and a buff for every finisher and hot/cold drinks and food at the Sports Centre.
