Man carrying a sack of potatoes in a race

Half Baked Race

Are you tired of the usual 5k, 10k, half marathon format? Then Edinburgh-based Great Scottish Events is offering something different on Sunday 1 July at Silverknowes Promenade. It's a short distance race - just one mile - but there is a twist. Participants are expected to carry a bag of potatoes!

Men are asked to haul a 20kg bag (just over three stones in old money) and women 10kg at the Great Scottish Tattie Run. There are relay options (4 x 400 metres) and anyone considering that option will face serious opposition from teams of army cadets and Hibernian FC supporters.

The Great Scottish Tattie Run is sponsored by Greenvale AP, a leading supplier of fresh potatoes and the UK’s largest grower of organic potatoes. And while there is a medal on offer at this event the major prize is that you get to take home the potatoes.

There is also a 'Spud and Spoon' race for kids and the whole occasion is played for laughs so if you get along make sure to take lots of photos and catch the 'potato carriers' in the most ludicrous poses.

The 2017 men’s race was won by Nick Keith-Barnett and Rosie Howie won the women’s race. Runners can choose to support a charity or just take part for fun.

The Great Scottish Tattie Run is £5 to enter and is part of the Great Scottish Walk & Run Festival which includes a 5k and 10k run and a 10k and 20k walk as well as shorter Golden Mile walks and the children's Great Scottish Toddle.

The final question for finishers is what to do with their 'Tattie' haul. Chips or roast potatoes are an obvious answer but might not fit in with a healthier lifestyle. Potato salad, cheese and leek bake or shepherd's pie might be options.

More details about all the events are available on the website.
