Edinburgh to North Berwick 20

20 Miles In May

The Edinburgh to North Berwick 20 continues to hold a special place in Scotland’s distance running calendar...

One of Scotland’s classic road races, the Edinburgh to North Berwick 20, is set to return on Saturday 2 May, continuing its revival after being brought back to the calendar in 2022. First staged in 1958, the race was a fixture for decades before a break after 2017. Its return has been warmly welcomed by the Scottish running community, with the 20 mile distance offering a valuable stepping stone for those preparing for spring marathons.

The course runs east from Edinburgh to the East Lothian coast, following a largely flat and fast route on hard surfaces. Organisers say: "In recent years the distance has been professionally measured at exactly 20 miles, maintaining the standard set since 2009 and giving runners confidence in using the race as a reliable benchmark."

Much of the route takes in promenades, pavements and shared paths, with only short sections on open roads. The closing stages are a highlight, with the final mile running almost straight through North Berwick before finishing on the grass beside the putting green on Beach Road.

As well as the competitive element, organisers are keen to maintain the welcoming and traditional feel of the event. There will be a range of prizes and spot prizes on offer, along with a team competition for groups of three or four runners. All finishers will receive a commemorative drinks coaster, while food and refreshments will be available at the finish area, adding to the relaxed atmosphere after the race.

The event also carries a strong sense of history, with the original race trophy, first presented by North Berwick Town Council in 1960, having been rediscovered ahead of the race’s return in 2022 after being missing for more than a decade.
