Eastbourne 10K race action

Friendly, flat & fast – Eastbourne 10K ticks all the boxes

'The friendly, flat and fast seafront 10km' is how Eastbourne 10K describes itself and the only descriptor missing on Sunday (30 June) was sunny. While the first three factors are guaranteed the weather is beyond the control of Sue and Liz of Small Fry Fitness Events, who are the driving force behind this sold out race.

The second running of Eastbourne 10K was again blessed with superb conditions and the results were liberally sprinkled with personal bests achieved on the out and back promenade course.

More than £1,300 was raised for the race charities AMAZE and the Princes Trust as Calum Upton (Winchester, 35:32) took a minute off the inaugural course record that was set last year by Alex Collins (London Heathside).

Collins was back to defend but had to settle for second (36:59) on this occasion. Paul Mealling (Hailsham, 37:18 PB) and Tom Clewley (Brighton Phoenix, 38:13) were next, followed by leading masters Dave Woollard (M40 Heathfield, 38:26) and Martin Bell (M50 Hailsham, 39:08).

Sarah Kingston (W45 Worthing, 39:51) was an excellent seventh overall ahead of local unaffiliated runner Laura Temple (40:34) and W45 rival Kirsty Armstrong (Burgess Hill, 41:33). There were 295 finishers inside 1:40 and the midpoint runner was Victoria Little (55:44).

Sue Fry of the race organisation said: “The sun was shining (again!), people were smiling, and temperatures soared for the second Eastbourne 10k. Congratulations to all of you who took part and we hope you enjoyed the race as much as we did as organisers. We were overwhelmed by the positive feedback from our runners and marshals. Let’s hope you all return next year and join the carnival style atmosphere”.
