Fitness & fun on the farm

The Farm Fitness 10K burst onto the south's running calendar on Sunday (30 June) with over 200 finishers and funds raised for Herts & Essex Air Ambulance and the Annabelle Rose Foundation for spinal muscular atrophy.

This new event is hosted from private farmland in Little Canfield, Essex and the course includes farm tracks, bridleways, fields and a small road section through the beautiful Essex countryside before finishing in Mill Court Field, home to a party atmosphere led by none other than Red Bull.

There could not have been a more fitting winner of the inaugural event as Tim Woulfe (Braintree & District, 37:34) is the father of a child with spinal muscular atrophy, one of the causes the event was raising money for.

Woulfe was just two seconds clear of Ben Sloan (Woodford Green & Essex Ladies, 37:38) in a close fought contest for the spoils of victory. M40 Danny Beazley (Bishops Stortford, 38:15) was third and half a dozen men broke 40 minutes.

Just outside that threshold was the women's race winner Jackie Stretton (Springfield Striders, 40:46) as Katie Lysons (Sunderland Strollers, 43:05) and W45 Fiona Halls (Saffron Striders, 45:13) completed the rostrum. Exactly 50 athletes ducked under 50 minutes in a tidy results list. Just over 100 beat the hour and there were 209 classified finishers in 1:49:33.

This initial event boasted an athletes village with free burgers and sausages by Heck and other food and drink provided by Red Bull, WheyHey, CocoPro, Winfresh, NEAT Nutrition and a double decker bus bar serving refreshments to the older participants.

The following post on social media was representative of the event's impact on the running community: “Thank you so much for a brilliant event. Absolutely loved the route and the event village was perfect. Extremely well organised and for two amazing causes. Well done to all involved and thank you again. What a great morning”.
