The Only Way Is Up!

Tackle England’s longest continuous incline at this summertime challenge...

Runners looking for a unique and punishing test of endurance will want to head to Mytholmroyd this June as the Cragg Challenge returns for another year. Held on 22 June, this popular event invites participants to take on the full might of Cragg Road (England’s longest continuous incline) in a series of chip-timed races for all ages and abilities.

At the heart of the event is the signature 10 mile race, which climbs five relentless miles to the highest point of Cragg Road before turning around for an equally tough descent. The route is fully closed to traffic, giving runners the rare opportunity to conquer this dramatic Calderdale Road without any distractions. With three refreshment stations along the way, two of which are revisited on the return leg, runners have plenty of chances to stay fuelled throughout the challenge.

Alongside the main event, the Cragg Challenge also features a 10K race, a 5K race and the John Jones Memorial Mile - a fast and furious one-mile dash with a half mile climb and descent. For younger runners and local schools, the Oliver Collinge Climb offers a unique relay challenge, where pupils from primary and secondary schools team up to carry a replica Coiner’s Coin baton to the summit.

The Cragg Challenge supports Overgate Hospice and Cancer Research UK, and organisers are encouraging all participants and supporters to donate as every contribution goes directly to these charities.

Places are limited and demand is high, so runners are encouraged to sign up early to secure a spot. Whether you're in it to race, cheer someone on or soak up the atmosphere, the Cragg Challenge is a highlight of Yorkshire’s summer running calendar - and a hill you’ll never forget!
