Lucky 13!
13 is the magic number at this popular autumn trail event in Greater Manchester...
Organised by Greater Manchester club, Radcliffe AC, the Thirteen Arches Half Marathon is a popular autumnal trail race for runners in the area and entries for the 2 November event are now open!
The name pays tribute to the Clifton Viaduct which is known locally as the '13 Arches'. A Grade II listed stone structure crossing the valley of the River Irwell and also the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal. Runners pass by the monilith as part of the 13.1 mile course.
The glorious trail route also takes in parts of the Irwell Sculpture Trail, the former Outwood Colliery in Radcliffe, Outwood Trail, Philips Park and Prestwich Clough. Runners can expect a few hills and some mud, together with plenty of points of interest on the course.
Speaking about their event, organisers say: "Runners get to run through our local trails with a super varied route and all the amazing autumn colours - don't worry though, we haven't lost anyone in the woods to date!"
In 2023 runners were treated to some fantastic weather and so organisers are hoping for the same again in 2024. Matt Cooper from Salford Harriers was first male in an astonishing 1:23:05 while Jenny Badger of Prestwich Athletic Club was first lady who clocked 1:40:47 which was another impressive time.
