Still Be A Part Of The Great North Run 2026

Securing a charity place at this year's Great North Run will turn disappointment into opportunity...

Runners who missed out in the ballot for the AJ Bell Great North Run are reminded not to give up on their dream of taking part in one of the UK’s most iconic events. For many in the north of the country, running the Great North Run has been a long held ambition, yet year after year the ballot can be unforgiving. With the 2026 event marking an incredible 45 years, you could still be a part of the celebrations!

On 13 September, around 60,000 runners will line up for the iconic event, and a significant number of them will be taking part as charity runners. Why not do the same and get yourself to that start line?

Each year, charity runners at the Great North Run raise in the region of £25 million for good causes, supporting organisations across health, community, research and social care. Choosing a charity place means committing to fundraising, but it also brings a strong sense of motivation throughout the training journey and on race day itself.

The event's charity partners play a crucial role in the event, offering encouragement and practical support. Many runners already have a charity close to their heart, but those still deciding can explore the full list of official Great North Run charities to find a cause that resonates with them.

Early fundraising is key and talking openly about your target with friends, family, colleagues and social media followers can make a big difference. Setting up an online fundraising page is one of the simplest and most effective ways to raise money, GoFundMe allows you to track donations easily and see your progress build - a powerful motivator during training!
