Brits Battle In China
Captain Gourley leads GB to fourth in the medal table in World Indoors...
A small team of 11 athletes travelled to China for the World Athletics Indoor Championships held in the Sports Training Centre, Nanjing from 21 – 23 March 2025. Despite having one of the smaller teams the GB athletes performed with distinction, finishing fourth on the medal table behind the USA (6 gold), Norway (3 gold) and Ethiopia (2 gold).
Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway) was the undisputed star with gold medals in the 3000m and 1500m on consecutive days (22 and 23 March) to become the second athlete ever to win two gold medals in individual events at these world championships.
GB team captain Neil Gourley (Giffnock North) maintained the tradition of Scottish athletes giving Ingebrigtsen a hard time in global championships, taking a close silver in the 1500m in 3:39.07 to Ingebrigtsen's 3:38.79.
In the women's 1500m, Georgia Hunter-Bell (Belgrave Harriers) set a superb PB of 3:59.84 for the bronze medal. This was an upgrade on her fourth at last year's World Indoors in Glasgow and agonisingly close to Laura Muir's British indoor record of 3:59.58.
Earlier, GB had claimed two gold medals in the sprints. European Indoor 60m champion Jeremiah Azu (Cardiff) added World Athletics Indoor gold in 6.49 seconds, equalling his PB set in the European Championships in Apeldoorn two weeks earlier.
Amber Anning (Brighton & Hove) won a thrilling 400m in 50.60 – just 0.03 ahead of USA's Alexis Holmes, who fell at the finish line in a desperate lunge for victory. This was redemption for Anning who was disqualified for a lane infringement at the European Indoor Championships.
