Wainwright Pennine Journey Ultra

In Wainwright's Footsteps

Take on one of England’s toughest challenges this May...

The Wainwright Pennine Journey Ultra is back on 2 May and will once again provide ultra runners with the chance to test themselves on one of England’s toughest 100 mile races. This brutal yet breathtaking event follows in the footsteps of legendary fell walker Alfred Wainwright, traversing some of the most rugged and remote landscapes of the North Pennines.

Inspired by Wainwright’s 1938 Pennine journey, this ultra-marathon challenges participants with two distance options. There is the 112 mile solo or relay which starts from Blanchland or a 52 mile ultra which starts from Alston. Runners will tackle sections of Hadrian’s Wall, Cross Fell, High Cup Nick, and Cauldron Snout, enduring bogs, fells, and harsh terrain along the way.

Elite runners have set staggering times with Paul Brunger clocking 25:28:34 at the 2024 112 mile race and Rebecca Cesar de Sa finishing the same distance in 35:29:55 back in 2022. The 52 mile record-holders include: John Bottomley in 9:31:00 (2022) and Kim Loney im 11:51:52 (2024). With new challengers in 2025, will these records be broken again?

At the finish line, participants can look forward to a hot meal, cakes, and drinks, plus a bespoke eco-friendly memento, completion certificate and exclusive event swag.

Final word to the organisers, Greener Miles Running: "This gruelling but stunning ultra-marathon is not just a race—it’s an adventure, a battle against the elements and a tribute to Wainwright’s enduring legacy."
