Entries Open For The Big Half

As announcements go this one is Big: The Big Half returns on 3 September 2023

Three-time champion Sir Mo Farah (Newham & Essex Beagles, 1:01:49) – 87 seconds outside Kenenisa Bekele's 2020 record time – and new women's course record holder Eilish McColgan (Dundee Hawkhill, 1:07:35) were both the marquee signings and winners of last year's The Big Half – London's community half marathon – which takes place again on Sunday 3 September.

Organisers London Marathon Events (LME) have announced that entries are open for The Big Half 2023. The route goes through four London boroughs – Tower Hamlets, Southwark, Lewisham, and Greenwich – and is a celebration of the many diverse communities it passes.

To help ensure the event is as inclusive as possible for people who live in these neighbourhoods London Marathon Events (LME) offers discounted resident entries (£46) for people living in the four boroughs plus special £10 community entries for local groups and organisations, community sports clubs, schools or local charities in London that benefit their local community.

The Big Half route starts close to the Tower of London and heads out to the financial district of Canary Wharf before returning to central London, crossing Tower Bridge, and finishing in spectacular style at Cutty Sark in Greenwich.

General entries are also available, costing £56, with a £2 reduction for members of UKA clubs. All finishers will be entitled to receive a New Balance finisher's T-shirt and medal – however, all entrants will again be offered the opportunity to choose to have a tree planted instead of receiving a T-shirt, as part of an ongoing partnership with Trees Not Tees.

The initiative, supported by New Balance, will see Trees Not Tees allocate a freshly planted sapling from their sustainable reforestation project in the UK to everyone who takes this option. In return, participants will receive a personalised digital certificate, including a photo of their tree and a what3words geolocation so they can visit their tree if they’d like to.

Last year saw 12,612 people complete The Big Half and nearly 2,000 took part in the free to enter The Big Mile later in the day. More information on entries for The Big Mile and the New Balance Big Relay will follow shortly.
