Ballot Beats World Best

TCS London Marathon breaks all participation records as half a million apply

More than half a million people have applied for a place in the 44th TCS London Marathon on Sunday 21 April 2024 – the first marathon in history to receive more than 500,000 applicants.

A total of  578,374 hopefuls from the UK and across the globe entered the ballot for the 2024 TCS London Marathon, setting a new world record. The previous world-best total of 457,861 applications was set in 2019 by applicants for the 2020 London Marathon.

The total number of UK ballot entries for 2024 was 457,105 of which 242,119 were from men (52.9%) and 212,179 from women (46.4%) with 2,807 (0.6%) non-binary applications. There were a further 121,269 applications in the international ballot for non-UK residents.

Hugh Brasher, Event Director for the TCS London Marathon, said: “This incredible new world record reflects the extraordinary inspirational effect of the TCS London Marathon on 23 April. We saw a record number of more than 48,600 finishers on Marathon Day and more than 8,200 children took part in the mass TCS Mini London Marathon the day before".

The ballot for the 2024 TCS London Marathon closed at 21:00 on Friday 28 April and entrants will be emailed their results by the end of June this year. This enormous response means that TCS London Marathon is the most popular marathon on the planet and more than one million people have completed the event since its first edition in 1981.

In an era of ever-spiralling costs and escalating entry fees TCS London Marathon still represents remarkable value for domestic entries with a charge of £69.99 payable by those who are successful in the ballot.

However, runners who choose to donate their entry fee to the London Marathon Foundation when they enter will be automatically entered into a second ballot – doubling their chance of getting a place in the 2024 event. The entry fee is also reduced from £69.99 to £49.99 if they are successful in either ballot. And prospective entrants who are unsuccessful in both ballots will receive a winter training top valued at £60! International entrants who are accepted will pay £120, plus a £26 carbon offset levy.

A record 49,272 runners set off from Greenwich in the 43rd TCS London Marathon and with 48,675 finishers in 8:10:58 this was easily the biggest London Marathon to date, eclipsing the previous record of 42,549 finishers in 2019.
