Fast Times On The Beach
Popular north east 10K, known for its speedy course, still has some spots up for grabs...
Runners chasing fast times need to head to the north east coast this summer as the Metro Aberdeen Beach 10K returns to the city’s seafront on 19 June.
Billed as the fastest and most competitive 10K in Aberdeen, the popular evening race takes place along the Beach Esplanade on a flat, accurately measured course with no road crossings. Competitors race entirely on the upper and lower promenade, making it an ideal opportunity for personal best performances.
Organised by Metro Aberdeen Running Club, the event starts on the upper promenade outside the Beach Leisure Centre before heading north towards Donmouth. Runners then drop to the lower promenade and sweep south to Footdee, known locally as Fittie, before returning north again for a second loop and the final push to the finish. While the route is renowned for its speed, coastal winds can play a decisive role on race night.
Prize money will be awarded to the first three male and female finishers, along with age category prizes. This year organisers have also introduced a £200 bonus for the first male and female athletes to break the long standing course records. The current marks stand at 29:38, set by Sean Chalmers in 2024, and 35:03, set by Nicola Gauld in 2016.
First staged in 1985 and under the stewardship of Metro Aberdeen Running Club since 2014, the Beach 10K has become a staple of the north east racing calendar, attracting club runners and elite athletes alike in search of a fast coastal test.
