In a follow-up to our recent story about the return of Aberdeen Marathon, there is already another significant development. The Marathon has sold out almost a year before race day.

The full Marathon will take place on Saturday 17 July 2027, bringing the distance back to the Granite City after an absence of 37 years. Runners who missed out can now join a waiting list, while entries remain available for the Half Marathon and 5K taking place as part of the same running festival.

The response continues a remarkable period for distance running in Aberdeen. The inaugural City of Aberdeen Half Marathon in July 2026 was originally limited to 2,000 runners and sold out, providing an early indication of the demand for a major running event in the city.

Following the success of that event, organisers confirmed the return of the full Marathon for 2027 alongside the Half Marathon and a new 5K. It did not take long for runners to respond.

Aberdeen has not staged a full Marathon since 1990, making the 2027 race a significant revival for the city's running calendar. The route will start in the city centre and showcase Aberdeen's urban landscape, coastline and green spaces.

Runners will head from the Marischal Square area towards Milltimber before returning through the city, with the route also passing through the University of Aberdeen's historic King's College campus.

The event is being developed by the not-for-profit Aberdeen Marathon Company, which has set out to establish a major annual running festival in the north-east of Scotland.

With the Marathon field already full, attention now turns to the remaining opportunities to take part. Half Marathon and 5K entries are still available, while the Marathon waiting list gives runners the chance to be considered should a place become available.

For a race still almost a year away, filling the Marathon field is a powerful early indication of the interest generated by its return. After 37 years without an Aberdeen Marathon, plenty of runners clearly want to be on the start line when the distance finally comes back to the city.
