Step Up 4 Good charity run 2018

Step Up For The Common Good

Greenham Common, Newbury has a fascinating history and it is now the home of the local parkrun. The name will be forever linked world-wide with nuclear deterrence and the peace movement that peaked in the 1980s but now the 1,200 acres of open heathland provides a spectacular and peaceful venue for the Step Up 4 Good charity running event on 14 October.

Greenham Common has been of military significance for hundreds of years and was first requisitioned as an airfield in 1941. In 1997 the Greenham Common Trust bought the old airbase and Greenham Common has been developed as a world class venue for business and the arts.

Greenham Trust's charity running event, Step Up 4 Good, comprises three events for running enthusiasts of all ages and abilities: the Mini Mile for younger children and families; a 5K fun run for older children and families and the 10K race for runners aged 15 and above. Every entrant will receive a race T-shirt, bespoke medal, official chip timing and a well marked, flat course ideal for first-time runners.

With only 1,000 spaces available, Greenham Trust is hoping that runners will register well in advance of the third running of this event to avoid disappointment. The message is: “Step Up 4 Good in October 2018, get energised and support local causes through the Good Exchange”.

Last year's 10K winner Matthew Green (34:31) said, “I was really pleased with the course. It's always great to run around Greenham Common – the scenery of the course was amazing and helped distract me from the fatigue during the race! It was well signposted and the lead vehicle was a really good idea as I didn’t have to worry about getting lost and could just focus on running as quickly as possible”.

Since its inception, Greenham Trust has supported over 1,000 local organisations, donating more than £40 million in 20 years. Runners who Step Up 4 Good on 14 October will support local community projects through The Good Exchange which has distributed £5.8m to local good causes.
