Chopwell Woods Trails

Chop, Chop!

You'd be mad to miss out on this fantastic new trail race through Chopwell Woods...

The second weekend in September may be 'all about' the Great North Run, but for those who haven't got a place at the iconic half there is another option the day before (9 September) and this circular trail race in Chopwell Woods offers runners something a little bit different.

The Chopper gained its name as part of a competition back in June. Race organisers, Greener Miles, put out a request for suggestions on social media and were astounded at the response. Among the names suggested were Ring-a-ring of Chopwell, The Chopwell Chug Along, Chopwell Ring a Rosie, Chopwell Frontyard Ultra.

As a help some event info was supplied; 4.2 mile loop, 500 ft ascent, 6 or 12 hrs and the clock doesn't stop! The winning suggestion came from Thomas Greenhalgh and Katie Marie Kirkup both of who won a free entry for themselves and a friend.

Organisers comment: "This is a great format for setting a new distance PB and practising for a Backyard Ultra. The loop is 4.2 miles long with 500ft ish of elevation gain and in testing it's fairly comfy to get around in 45 mins or so."

In simple terms, participants must run as many of the 4.2 mile loops as they can within their chosen time limit . Only complete laps will be counted, so runners need to work out if it’s worth starting another lap if they've only 30 mins to get around.

The event promises a fantastic finishline atmosphere too with basic snacks such as water and fruit provided while hot drinks and possibly pizza too, will be available to purchase.

Chopwell Woodland Park is a 360-hectare mixed woodland on the fringe of Gateshead. Trails criss-cross through the woodland, offering glimpses of the area’s industrial past including restored railway trucks that would have carried coal from the nearby collieries. The Woodland Park is great for trail running and enjoying the local wildlife. If you’re lucky you may spot one of the deer, badgers, red kites or squirrels.
