Asda Foundation Sheffield Half Marathon

Sheffield Smiles For Premier Half Marathon

With a remarkable field of close to 5500 runner making their way to Arundel Gate on Sunday (8 April) the Run For All team showed just why the Asda Foundation Sheffield Half Marathon now stands as Yorkshire’s premier 13.1 mile event.

A key part of the city’s sporting calendar, the race drew in large crowds of enthusiastic spectators around the scenic route which, following a climb out of the city centre, offered outstanding views of the Peak District.

Sunday’s runners started in Arundel Gate and followed a course that took them along Ecclesall Road, Knowle Lane, Ringinglow Road, Sheephill Road, Hathersage Road, Limb Lane and then back down into the city centre for the big finish near the Town Hall in Pinstone Street.

Some of the biggest cheers of the day were reserved for famous fundraiser John 'the man with the pram' Burkhill, who was taking part to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The Handsworth pensioner, a familiar figure in many events as he pushes a pram while wearing a bright green wig, has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charity.

Despite the race having the notorious mile-long climb on Ringinglow Road, there were some fast finishes at the front with William Mycroft, top at last month’s Cambridge Half, securing first in 1:11:12. Sheffield Triathlon’s Julian Lings took second in 1:11:47 and Steve Franklin third in 1:11:54. Hallamshire’s Nicola Squires was top in the female field in in 1:19:21, followed by Kirsty Longley 1:19:36 and Emma Parkinson 1:23:09.

Mandy Rivett, Asda Foundation Co-ordinator, said: “Sheffield is a city with a great sporting heritage and we are delighted to be associated with such a fantastic event as the Sheffield Half Marathon. It was wonderful to see so many runners taking on the challenge for some truly excellent causes. Well done to everyone involved.”
