Scottish Islands Peaks Race

Running On Sea Legs!

The ultimate sailing and running challenge returns in 2025...

The Scottish Islands Peaks Race is set to return on 16 May, offering teams of sailors and fell runners a one-of-a-kind adventure across Scotland’s stunning west coast. This legendary endurance race blends sailing and mountain running, creating a thrilling multi-day challenge that tests both physical strength and navigational skill.

Starting in Oban, the race kicks off with a short hill run before competitors set sail for Salen on Mull, where runners take on the mighty Ben More. From there, teams sail to Craighouse on Jura, tackling the iconic Paps of Jura before making their way to Arran for the final test - Goat Fell. After conquering the mountains, it’s a final sailing sprint to Troon, where exhausted but exhilarated teams cross the finish line after three to four days of intense racing.

Teams consist of five members, typically two runners and three sailors, though the All Rounders class allows for competitors who can both run and sail. There is also a Youth class, giving younger participants a chance to experience the thrill of the race with the guidance of experienced adults. Navigational skills are essential, as the 60 miles of running includes a grueling 11,500 feet of climbing, while the 160 nautical mile sailing course challenges crews with powerful tides and open water crossings through the infamous Corryvreckan and Mull of Kintyre.

Organisers say: "More than just a race, the Scottish Islands Peaks Race fosters a spirit of adventure, encouraging sailors to appreciate fell running and runners to experience the exhilaration of sailing. It’s also a chance for youth teams to build self-confidence, all while raising funds for charitable causes. The event has become an annual tradition for many teams, who return year after year to test themselves against the elements, the terrain and their rivals."

Each edition of the race brings its own unforgettable moments - strategic battles for position, breathtaking sunrises over the water and encounters with dolphins and whales. With its mix of challenging terrain, fast-paced sailing and awe-inspiring scenery, this is a race like no other.
