Race the Train is organised by Trail Blazing Events and follows an approximately 11 Mile point to point route from Bury to Rawtenstall. Runners set off from the East Lancashire Railway at the sound of the train whistle before attempting to beat the heritage train to the finish.

The trail course heads north beside the East Lancashire Railway and the River Irwell through the scenic Irwell Valley. The train travels ahead before stopping to change tracks, giving runners the opportunity to catch and pass it during this distinctive challenge.

Water stations, marshals and a clearly marked route support runners throughout the course. Every finisher receives a custom medal and T shirt, while friends and family can travel on the train and cheer from points along the route.
