Runners At A Windy Llanelli Half Marathon

Over 1,500 have a blast at Llanelli Half

There were strong winds rather than sea breezes along the exposed coastal sections of the course at Sunday’s (8 March) Llanelli Half Marathon. The blustery conditions didn’t spoil the runners’ enjoyment of the race or stop more than a few from achieving a PB.

The Risk Kitchen Llanelli Half Marathon was rescheduled from 9 February due to Storm Ciara and this well-organised, friendly race from Front Runner Events went ahead to great success. This time the weather was ‘mixed’ rather than extreme as was the case a month ago and there were stunning views across the estuary to North Gower to look forward to along with the bespoke medal and T-shirt.

It started and finished at the home of the local rugby union team, Parc Y Scarlets and the closed road course was well marshalled and supported. Runners left the stadium to follow the Coastal Link Road then through Sandy Water Park to Pwll where they continued along the picturesque Millennium Coastal Path.

Dewi Griffiths of Swansea Harriers was like a whirlwind as he crossed the line to win in 1:06:52. Luke Williams of San Domenico RC was second in 1:09:53 and Matthew Rees of Swansea Harriers third in 1:11:04.

Adam ‘Tango’ Holland of Tavistock AC took fourth place in 1:12:23.

A speedy finish by Natasha Cockram of Micky Morris Racing Team saw her win the women’s race in 1:15:27. Carys Hughes of Cardiff AAC finished more than five minutes later in 1:20:35 with Rachel Davies of Swansea Harriers third in 1:23:36.

Two upcoming races to consider are the Great Welsh Marathon and Half Marathon on 5 April. Then the JCP Swansea Half Marathon on 14 June.
