The Mizuno Wave Sky 2 takes you to the limit
Having built up a stock of shoes a couple of years ago I found myself trying a new pair for the first time in a while. I was lucky the shoes on trial were Mizuno's Wave Sky 2s.
First thoughts out of the box were that the Wave Sky 2 was a solid shoe. The blue colour way looked attractive and well-designed but not flashy, ideal for an everyday runner whose priority was performance.
These shoes, aimed at neutral runners, were a good fit, sometimes an issue for me with a broad foot. They were very comfortable on and my foot wasn't restricted although they seemed nicely fitted. The Mizuno boffins say this is down to the newly-designed AeroHug mesh in the midfoot which provides a secure fit as it wraps round your arch to eliminate space between foot and shoe while running.
The Wave Sky 2 is superbly cushioned - courtesy of the Wave ultra-soft cushioning - and the emphasis with this shoe is on comfort. My initial runs confirmed a shoe that was going to work for runners who wanted to enjoy long low-key miles.
This shoe has a luxurious feel and is built to take you a good distance. The impact-absorbing midsole adds to the smoothness of the run and the Sky 2 also gives a soft heel landing and a smooth transition. Serious comfort extends to a very plush heel cup and well-padded shoe tongue.
I think I would revert to Mizuno's classic neutral shoe, the Wave Rider (295g), for speed work or on race day but the Wave Sky 2 (335g) is now my 'go to' model for the steady midweek miles and longer weekend runs. For any new runners wanting a friendly shoe to guide them through those early training miles look no further than the Wave Sky 2.
