Mighty Deerstalker's Final Farewell

If you've ever fancied it, then now's the time to enter the iconic Mighty Deerstalker...

In case you missed the memo - this year's Mighty Deerstalker event will be the farewell outing for the Borders-based frolic in the hills! Scheduled for 11 March, the 'final scramble' will see runners bid adieu after 15 incredible years of mad-cap racing.

The race, in which runners don their finest tweed to take on brutal Borders mud and hills – in the dark – takes place in the grounds of Traquair House, Innerleithen. Organisers describe the adventuring that is on offer thus: "This rollercoaster route lives up to the rumours and you find your teeth chattering through icy water, your thighs screaming at the never ending climbs, your eyes frantically trying to adjust to the dark as your other senses heighten and you freefall down slippery trails."

If you’ve never experienced the eerie brilliance of this classic Rat Race event then you need to grab yourself a spot on the start line and experience what has made it so popular over the years. After some adrenaline-fuelled muddy race action there will be 'one hell of a send off' in the Beerstalker party tent as the sun goes down on the event for one last time.

The ‘brutally brilliant mountain adventure’ was dropped from the company’s forward roster in 2020 after the pandemic forced Rat Race, in common with other organisers, to make tough decisions on which events in their calendar to carry forward. Promotion surrounding the return of the Mighty Deerstalker suggests that encouragement from runners to bring the event back one last time played a large part in its return.
