Men Get Ready For Father's Day Run
Although the Run For Life caravan rolls into Dundee and Falkirk, it's the fellas that take centre stage in Glasgow. After last weekend's Great Women's Run, the Men's 10K enjoys top billing on Sunday (17 June).
2,500 men will toe the line at the Riverside Museum before heading east along the Clyde and under the Hielanman's Umbrella to George Square and the halfway point. The field continues to run east crossing the river for a kilometre stretch on the south side before heading into Glasgow Green and the final quarter of the race.
Runners should expect good support in the city centre and remember to re-hydrate at the half way point just past George Square. Currently the BBC weather forecast is saying 16 degrees, light cloud and breezy.
Last year Cambuslang Harrier Stuart Gibson was first home in 31:41 with Dougie Selman (31:56) and David Savage (33:42) completing the podium places.
Hundreds of runners will be supporting good causes again this year - the Men's 10K has its origins in promoting men's health - including Ryan Watt who will be pulling on a SAMH vest on Sunday. On what will be Father's Day, Ryan will be remembering his dad who died last year. Check out Ryan's story at the Just Giving website.
This weekend gets off to a flying start tonight at Pollok Park in Glasgow where Bellahouston Harriers stage their regular summer party in the shape of the Brian Goodwin 10K. Last year's event saw a brilliant race with Callum Hawkins (29:12) finishing just 12 seconds ahead of Luke Traynor and creating a new course record by over a minute.
Traynor may well be eyeing that mark after his recent half marathon success in the Czech Republic. Another former winner of the Brian Goodwin 10K Michael Deason and recent Shettleston 10K winner Calum McKenzie will also line-up.
The women's race has a competitive look too. Fionnuala Ross of Shettleston Harriers is the favourite but course record holder Jenny Bannerman is also in the field alongside 2017 winner Elspeth Curran and Michelle Sandison.
This time round the Harriers are introducing a three wave system to ensure a smooth start to the race which is already a 500-place sell-out.
Other highlights of a busy weekend programme of races are the Pride Run in Edinburgh, the Run Mhor event at Balquhidder and the Muckle Toon trail runs at Langholm.
