Run Sunderland This May
Popular city half marathon and 10K return to Sunderland this May...
One of the North East’s biggest running events returns this spring as the Sunderland City Runs bring thousands of runners back to the city streets.
Taking place on Sunday 17 May 2026, the event features both a half marathon and a 10K starting from Keel Square in the heart of Sunderland.
Known for its fast and accessible routes, the 10K offers a flat course ideal for all abilities, while the half marathon provides a longer challenge with a scenic route that takes runners along both sides of the River Wear and through key parts of the city.
The event has built a strong reputation over the years, combining a well organised race experience with a welcoming atmosphere that appeals to both first time runners and experienced competitors. From the start line through to the finish, the support from spectators and volunteers helps create a real sense of occasion.
With traffic free roads and a lively city centre backdrop, Sunderland City Runs delivers a race day experience that feels both big and personal at the same time. It is the kind of event where you can focus on your own run while still being part of something much bigger.
Many runners return year after year, drawn by the combination of a fast course and a friendly environment. Whether you are aiming for a personal best or simply looking to enjoy the experience, it is a great opportunity to take on a well supported event in a fantastic setting.
As spring racing picks up across the region, Sunderland stands out as one of the key dates on the calendar, offering a chance to test yourself over distance or enjoy a high energy 10K in the heart of the North East.
