Manchester dog prepares for marathon effort

Following in the legacy of Cactus, the dog who shot to fame after taking part in this year’s Marathon Des Sables, a dog in Manchester is aiming to complete a marathon and raise over £15,000 in the process.

Six years ago, Sherry was shot in Bulgaria, causing paralysis. After first being rescued by Twitchy Noses, Sherry was taken in by Dogs4Rescue, where she was offered sanctuary and underwent surgery to have her back legs and tail removed.

Having recently been fitted with new wheels which increase her mobility, Sherry is set to run a mile a day for 26 days to raise funds for Dogs4Rescue. It is hoped up to £15,000 will be raised, which will go towards a new visitors centre for the sanctuary.

Founder of Dogs4Rescue Emma Billington said: “We weren’t prepared to give up on Sherry and she wasn’t ready to give up on life. Every day she proves wrong those who advocated putting her to sleep.”

“She is a joyous, happy girl who loves life and her special matriarch role here. We re-home hundreds of dogs and Sherry is special friend to everyone and the first to take newbies under her wing.”

On top of her running exertions, Sherry is also an ambassador dog for the centre, fundraising events and corporate days showing everyone disabled dogs can enjoy a wonderful life.

Sherry has recently completed the third day of her marathon challenge - you can sponsor here.
