Head North For New 10K
A new island event for Scotland this summer...
Entries have recently opened for a brand new Scottish 10K but you could have a journey on your hands to take part as the race action will take place on Shapinsay - one of the Orkney Islands.
The Shapinsay 10K has been scheduled for 22 June and is a new event for the Orkney Athletic Club's road race series. Organisers say: "This is a new 10K event to our road series, and part of a wider fun family day out.
"As this is the first year of a new event, we're offering entry at £10 for members and non-members and there's plenty more for everyone to enjoy on the day."
The race action will start at 11am from Shapinsay Community School before runners are taken on a delightful tour of the picturesque island. There is also a short, family-friendly circular walk which will start just after the 10K.
Shapinsay is around 7 miles long and 3 miles wide with a population of around 350. The island may not be very big, but it is certainly striking and famous for its green fertile land and lack of hills. Speaking about getting to the race, organisers suggest: "Take the 9.45am ferry from Kirkwall which will arrive at 10.10am in Shapinsay. Easy peasy!"
There will be refreshments, crafts and games available from 11.30am. Cash donations are welcome and will go towards the Shapinsay Island Wellbeing Project. An RNLI raffle will be held in the Heritage Arts & Crafts Centre which is open 12-3pm.
